<BernieRoehl> One of the topics that came up at the workshop was how elaborate to get with costumes, props, and so on.

<Omy_> Well I think the costume is part of the play...probably why school girl scenes are popular cause they are relatively inexpensive to do
<janizz> one time there were Sseveral of us doing a 'school' thing..they set up rooms like classrooms and had us do math and english..etc...it was elaborate

<Trainer11> I have an idea...we should have a role play party...and the gimick is that for 1 hour beore the party we al go to Value Village and shop with a maximum of $10

<BernieRoehl> Serious as opposed to tongue-in-cheek, janizz. For example, an interrogate scene can be very serious and intense, whereas a schoolgirl fantasy is usually more light and fun

<BernieRoehl> That ties in with the "how serious" question. If things are really working, the concentration on the role leads the sub into subspace

<Trainer11> I have fantasized about the role of pony trainer...but that takes a lot of free space
<BernieRoehl> Interrogation scenes are a good example -- they can be extremelly intense, and a submissive who's drawn to that fantasy will often drop quickly and deeply
<Trufriend> i disagree Argonaught, subspace is achieved when a submissive achieves a certain level of intoxication to any given activity with a Dominant or even with another submissive...there are many different levels of subspace

<BernieRoehl> A large part of the workshop was hands-on, as opposed to lecture -- basically we each got to do a couple of light scenes

<Omy_> I think the people involved have to have a certain amount of creativity to make a roleplay work

<`abi> I think oasis, that it depends on how closely you can relate to the 'character' you're playing ... if it is an expression of part of yourself, then it's easier to slip into the role

<BernieRoehl> The element of surprise can help. It can also help if you start off with a fairly simple fantasy that doesn't involve a lot of elaborate costumes.

<Kilted_One> to answer oasis{Omy}, I would suggest pre- writting a script and going over it, and then add props/cothing makeup.........things to make the scene more "real"

<BernieRoehl> Dress up as the local sheriff, and a lot of subs may giggle. Put on a ski mask and pull out a switchblade, and they may not.

<Argonaught> ah. but once a Man has that label its a stigma thats impossible to ever get rid of it

<BernieRoehl> A tight script can certainly work. I've also had good success with a looser kind of scripting, more of a scenario than a script as such.

<Omy_> Would Pony play be considered role playing?

<BernieRoehl> For example, using the interrogation scene example we talked about earlier, the "script" is fairly simple -- the interrogator tries to get information from the captive, and the scene ends when the information is revealed.
<mist{LW}> i tend to think that a looser script makes for more spontinaity in the responses of the players, and allows for a change of direction if something happens that wasnt planned, but appeals to both

<BernieRoehl> Most roleplaying scenarios involve an inherent power difference between two of the characters

<Kilted_One> there is another thing that can be done to get the "headspace" right and that is "location'.....go some where that sets the mood for the scene...example pirate scene...on or near water in a boat, kidnap/rape scene in the bush, torture scene on a basement with concrete wall that sort of thing

<BernieRoehl> The examples that KO gave work well, and for the most part aren't hard to find. Other scenarios are trickier.

<sunao> I have a question I hesitate to ask....I can't conceive of playing the "little girl" but can conceive of the interrogation scene yet so far I don't take a great deal of pain...perhaps ;more than average but not great...Can someone help me understand a llittle better....Have only been to one where they role played so no knowledge.

<BernieRoehl> Interrogation scenes are (usually) not so much about pain, as they are about fear. They tend to be less physical and more psychological.

<BernieRoehl> So the concern is that someone might get so caught up in the fantasy that they have trouble letting it go?

<Kilted_One> the best "inter" scenes (from the experts who do it professionally) is that it is all in the head and there is little of no actual physical pain involved

<BernieRoehl> It helps to know the person being interrogated. If they're a "pain slut", there's no point in threatening them with pain (let alone using it).
<MistressSarcastica> Interrogation *for real* is about breaking someone, mentally and/or physically. Interrogation as role-play could include whatever the parties agree upon, no?

<MistressSarcastica> Why do people think there is a greater risk in role-play than other kinds of play? If the top is incompetent or out of control, the risk is real whether it's role-play or an over-the-knee spanking.
<Kilted_One> I would think it is because "mental mistakes" can leave more lasting injuries that phyical ones

<MistressSarcastica> I think that if you don't know what you are doing, you shouldn't be doing it, whether it's an interrogation scene, a rape scene or a ticking scene.
